Californian |
A Californian massage session begins with an overall assessment of the recipient’s health. Californian massage can benefit anyone looking to sustain a healthy relationship with his or her body and entire being.
With soft hands and by properly using his or her body weight and the correct breathing, the massage therapist invites the client to let go, release his or her muscles and rediscover his or her senses. The maneuvers are applied directly to the skin using massage oil, and the pace and depth of the maneuvers are varied. Based on a well defined and fluid series of maneuvers, Californian massage is characterized by long and enveloping movements. Given in a spirit of respect for the integrity of the individual, Californian also leaves ample room for creativity and personalization. And though it is passive, the recipient plays an important part by being conscious of his or her being. |
Amma |
Amma massage is based on the founding principles of Chinese medicine, chief among them the balance between yin and yang and the energy channels within the body.
In Amma massage, the massage therapist applies direct pressure to the body’s tsubos and acupressure points. Techniques include manipulations, movements and sophisticated percussions. Unlike the other basic massage techniques, Amma is performed through a cloth or clothing and involves no direct contact with the skin – in keeping with Japanese tradition – and no long effleurages or friction. Massage oil is therefore not used. In accordance with Japanese principle, Amma massage is not intended as a treatment: Each massage is viewed as complete in itself, and it is therefore not necessary to schedule a progressive series of sessions. |
